People everywhere are searching for something that is very valuable! It is priceless! It something that money cannot buy!
What is it called? Lasting JOY & HAPPINESS!
JOY AND HAPPINESS
The Bible has a lot to say about joy and happiness, and how it can be experienced in our lives. There are principles we can live by that produce happiness, and there are many distractions we can pursue that ultimately brings sorrow and despair.
Isaiah 51:3 – For the Lord will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; Joy and gladness will be found in it, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.
Isaiah 51:11 – The ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads. They shall obtain joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Isaiah 55:12 – … you shall go out with JOY and be led for with peace…
TWO KINDS OF HAPPINESS
1 – TEMPORARY HAPPINESS
This comes to us when the circumstances are just right; when things are pleasant and we are free of troubles. This type of happiness alone can be temporary and shallow. Eventually it disappears and the desire for true happiness remains.
Worldly riches, success, & fame themselves cannot really make you everlastingly happy. Ultimately there will always be disappointment, sorrow, and discontentment.
People often look for happiness in the wrong places, and in the wrong way…
Isaiah 55:1-2 – “Ho! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money. Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.
Special note: Here’s a few questions that are good to contemplate & evaluate – – are you getting what you want out of life? Why should we spend our money for that which is not bread and our labor for that which does not satisfy?

2 – Happiness that comes from God
John 10:10 – … I am come that you might have life, and that you might have it MORE ABUNDANTLY.
John 15:11 – “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
The happiness that comes from God is a happiness that lasts.
It brings an inner peace regardless of circumstances, not just based on the circumstances or feelings. You might not always “feel” happy, but there is an inner peace and joy that the world cannot give, and the world cannot take away.
The happiness through Jesus is a contentment & peace that fills the soul, even if the eyes are filled with tears.
JESUS is the source of true joy and happiness
Jesus birth brought great joy and gladness
Matthew 2:10 – When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding GREAT JOY.
Luke 2:10 – And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of GREAT JOY, which shall be to all people.
The Lord is the joy of the whole earth
Psalm 48:1-2 – Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised … 2 Beautiful for situation, the JOY of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL
This powerful song was birthed after experiencing a tragic accident. It describes an inner peace and joy in spite of the circumstances.
STORY
Horatio G. Spafford was a successful lawyer and businessman in Chicago with a lovely family – a wife, Anna, and five children. However, they were not strangers to tears and tragedy. Their young son died with pneumonia in 1871, and in that same year, much of their business was lost in the great Chicago fire. Yet, God in His mercy and kindness allowed the business to flourish once more.
On Nov. 21, 1873, the French ocean liner, Ville du Havre was crossing the Atlantic from the U.S. to Europe with 313 passengers on board. Among the passengers were Mrs. Spafford and their four daughters. Although Mr. Spafford had planned to go with his family, he found it necessary to stay in Chicago to help solve an unexpected business problem. He told his wife he would join her and their children in Europe a few days later. His plan was to take another ship.
About four days into the crossing of the Atlantic, the Ville du Harve collided with a powerful, iron-hulled Scottish ship, the Loch Earn. Suddenly, all of those on board were in grave danger. Anna hurriedly brought her four children to the deck. She knelt there with Annie, Margaret Lee, Bessie and Tanetta and prayed that God would spare them if that could be His will, or to make them willing to endure whatever awaited them. Within approximately 12 minutes, the Ville du Harve slipped beneath the dark waters of the Atlantic, carrying with it 226 of the passengers including the four Spafford children.
A sailor, rowing a small boat over the spot where the ship went down, spotted a woman floating on a piece of the wreckage. It was Anna, still alive. He pulled her into the boat and they were picked up by another large vessel which, nine days later, landed them in Cardiff, Wales. From there she wired her husband a message which began, “Saved alone, what shall I do?” Mr. Spafford later framed the telegram and placed it in his office.
Another of the ship’s survivors, Pastor Weiss, later recalled Anna saying, “God gave me four daughters. Now they have been taken from me. Someday I will understand why.”
Mr. Spafford booked passage on the next available ship and left to join his grieving wife. With the ship about four days out, the captain called Spafford to his cabin and told him they were over the place where his children went down.
According to Bertha Spafford Vester, a daughter born after the tragedy, Spafford wrote “It Is Well With My Soul” while on this journey.

Anna gave birth to three more children, one of which died at age four with dreaded pneumonia. In August 1881, the Spaffords moved to Jerusalem. Mr. Spafford died and is buried in that city.

Special note: It is amazing that although Mr. & Mrs. Spafford lost 6 of their 8 children to sicknesses & a drowning accident, they could still find such wellness, joy, peace and comfort in the midst of it all, because of their trust & faith in the Lord!
BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES THAT CAN HELP US WALK IN JOY
Joy is found in God’s presence
Psalm 16:11 – You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Joy is something God can restore & revive IN RESPONSE TO OUR PRAYERS
Psalm 51:12 – Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.
Psalm 85:6 – Will you not revive us again: that your people may rejoice in you?
Joy is the result of righteousness – the righteous are to rejoice greatly
Psalm 97:11 – Light shines on the godly, and joy on those whose hearts are right.
Ecclesiastes 2:26 – God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to those who please him.
Psalm 68:3 – But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.

Joy is found in delighting in God’s Word & obeying it

Joy is produced by the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:22 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…

Joy fills our heart as we remember the good things God has done through the people He has placed in our lives

Happiness comes from living in the fear of the Lord

Happiness comes from living in obedience to God’s Word
