When we praise the Lord for HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER, something very special happens. It resonates closely to the heart of our eternal God – for He is MERCIFUL! He is our source of MERCY!
Psalm 118:1-2,4,29 – Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. Let Israel now say, “His mercy endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord now say, “His mercy endures forever.” Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
Jeremiah 33:11 – …the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those who will say: “Praise the Lord of hosts, For the Lord is good, For His mercy endures forever”— and of those who will bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will cause the captives of the land to return as at the first,’ says the Lord.
Psalm 110:5 – For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.
Isaiah 54:8 – …WITH EVERLASTING KINDNESS I will have MERCY on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer.
The Lord’s COMPASSIONATE MERCIES are new every morning (day), and GREAT IS HIS FAITHFULNESS! (Lamentations 3:22,23)
JEHOSHAPHAT’S ARMY’S GREAT VICTORY
When they sent singers before the army who sang praises to the Lord FOR HIS MIERCY ENDURES FOREVER, their enemies were defeated! When they sang praises for God’s mercies, it was called in Scripture praising the “beauty of holiness”.
2 Chronicles 20:7– Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s…You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.”18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. 19 Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.” 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: “Praise the Lord, For His mercy endures forever.” 22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. 23 For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another. 24 So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped. …and they were three days gathering the spoil because there was so much. 26 And on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berachah, for there they blessed the Lord; therefore the name of that place was called The Valley of Berachah until this day. 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go back to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies.
PRAISING THE LORD’S MERCY IN THE TABERNACLE OF DAVID
I Chronicles 16:34 – O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good; for His mercy endures for ever... 41 And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the Lord, because his mercy endures for ever…
PRAISING THE LORD’S MERCY IN THE TEMPLE OF SOLOMON
2 Chronicles 5:13 – It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for His mercy endures for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the Lord…
2 Chronicles 7:1-3,6 – …the glory of the Lord filled the house. 2 And the priests could not enter into the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord’s house.3 And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for His mercy endures for ever... 6 And the priests waited on their offices: the Levites also with instruments of music of the Lord, which David the king had made to praise the Lord, because His mercy endures for ever, when David praised by their ministry; and the priests sounded trumpets before them, and all Israel stood.
PRAISING THE LORD’S MERCY at THE laying of the FOUNDATION OF THE TEMPLE
Ezra 3:11 – And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the Lord; because he is good, for His mercy endures forever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.
GOD OF MERCY
2 Corinthians 1:3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of MERCIES and the God of all comfort…
Micah 7:18 – Who is a God like unto you, that pardons iniquity, … because He delights in MERCY.
REVELATION OF GOD’S MERCY TO MOSES
Exodus 34:6-7 – And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
DEFINITIONS OF MERCY
Mercy is the compassionate treatment of those in distress, especially when it is within one’s power to punish or harm them.
mercy means price paid. It has the connotation of forgiveness, forbearance, kindness, gracious, faithfulness, goodness, tender hearted, charity, meekness...
Mercy relates to forgiveness or withholding punishment. For example, God the Father showed mercy on us when he sacrificed his son, Christ Jesus, on the Cross to pay the price for our sins.
The Mercy of God Remains Forever
God is eternaL, and his mercy is eternal
Since God is eternal, and He is merciful, it means His mercy is eternal. We cannot ever remove that character from him.
Psalm 118:29 – Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER.
In Psalm 136 every verse (all 26 verses) reminds us that HIS MERCY ENDURES FOREVER!
Deuteronomy 7:9 – “Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments…
Special note: 1 generation is from 25 to 50 years, approximately, according to different measurements. 1,000 generations could be anywhere from 25,000 to 50,000 years! However, that is nothing compared to eternity, which is time without measure!
Isaiah 54:10 – For the mountains shall depart And the hills be removed, But My kindness shall not depart from you, Nor shall My covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.
God’s eternal Mercy is abundant, and unending… His MERCY never runs out. It is always available when we come to Him.
Hebrews 4:16 – Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain MERCY and find grace to help in time of need.
difference between grace and mercy
There are some similarities between grace and mercy. Grace is freely given by God. It has to with experiencing the unmerited favor of God.
Mercy can be freely given, but as well it can be conditional – depending…
Special note: Mercy has to do with a compassionate response to those in distress. Those that are arrogant, proud and unrepentant may not obtain MERCY. There will be just punishment for the unrepentant.
Mercy is the fruit of compassion
Matthew 9:36 – when he saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them…
Matthew 14:14 – Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
Matthew 20:34 – Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
Mark 1:41 – Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
Luke 19:41-44 – (Jesus compassionately wept over Jerusalem.)
Luke 9:40-45- (Jesus compassionately healed the epileptic boy.)
Mark 10:46-52 – (Jesus compassionately healed blind Bartimaeus.)
Special note: Jesus’s unending, compassionate mercy gives us courage to continue to walk with him. It gives us peace, joy, encouragement, and hope.
Understanding God’s unending mercy is life-changing
As we come to understand His eternal mercy for us it will change our view of Him and we will have true respect for Him, and strive to be obedient.
Psalm 119:156 – Great are Your TENDER MERCIES, O Lord; revive me...
Psalm 94:18 – If I say, “My foot slips,” Your mercy, O Lord, will hold me up.

Hebrews 10:17-20 – Their sins and iniquities will I remember no more… having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He has consecrated for us… let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water...
2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
THE PARABLE OF THE UNMERCIFUL, unforgiving SERVANT
Matthew 18:23-35 – Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and Forgave him the debt.28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that you owe. 29 And his fellow-servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you all. 30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.31 So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O you wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you desired me: 33 Should not you also have had compassion on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if you from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
Matthew 5:7 – (Jesus said) Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Luke 6:36 – Be you therefore MERCIFUL, as your Father also is MERCIFUL.
James 2:13 – …He shall have judgment without MERCY, that has shown no MERCY; and MERCY rejoices against judgment.
Proverbs 3:3 – Let not MERCY and truth forsake you…
Proverbs 11:17 – The MERCIFUL man does good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubles his own flesh.
In Romans 1:29-32 (being UNMERCIFUL is listed among the sins of the unrighteous…)
Special note: As we experience God’s mercy in our life, let’s compassionately pass it along to others… As MERCY is shown, MERCY is multiplied. Let’s show mercy to others by allowing God’s mercy to flow through our lives...
Let’s Be forgiving
Ephesians 4:32 – And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Colossians 3:12-13 – Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
GOD HAS SHOWN MERCY TO SINFUL PEOPLE.

EXAMPLE: JONAH
Jonah 1:1-3 – Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
Nineveh was an Assyrian empire
Assyrians known for their wickedness and cruelty. Assyrian solders were very brutal.
Although Jonah disobeyed the Lord initially, he eventually repented and obediently went to Ninevah and preached the message from the Lord.
Nineveh responded to the message Jonah shared from the Lord and they repented of their sins. The Lord mercifully forgave them, and didn’t bring the judgment upon them He had planned to do.
THE LORD IS MercIFUL To REPENTANT Sinners
Psalm 86:5 – For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You.
Example: israelites during the time of Jeremiah

Even though they did that, God still showed His mercy and love to them.
Jeremiah 29:11-14 – For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.
GOD’S FAITHFUL MERCIES
Lamentations 3:22-23 – Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

Although the prodigal son rebelled and left His father, when he repented and came back to HIs father he received MERCY and forgiveness.
Luke 15:11-32- (when the prodigal son came to his senses he said) 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him “Father, I have sinned…”… 20 …when he was yet a great way off, his father was saw him and had COMPASSION and ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him… 24 (and said) this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found…
EXAMPLE: THE GOOD SAMARITAN
There was a lawyer that asked Jesus a question about who his neighbor was, when Jesus reminded him to love his neighbor as himself. In response, Jesus shared with him the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Luke 10:36-37 – Which of these three… was neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise”.
