KNOWING and UNDERSTANDING THE HOLY SPIRIT – WHO HE IS
(Getting better acquainted – what is He like?)
THE VOICE OF THE SPIRIT
- Listening
- Revelation 22:17 – the SPIRIT and the bride say, “Come!” And let him who hears say, “Come!” And let him who thirsts come. Whoever desires, let him take the water of life freely.
THE GODHEAD
- The Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead
- God the FATHER
- God the SON
- God the HOLY SPIRIT
- Colossians 2:9 – For IN HIM (Jesus) dwells all the fullness of the GODHEAD bodily…
“HE”
- The HOLY SPIRIT is a personality, not just an influence or power. The HOLY SPIRIT is spoken of as “HE”.
- John 16:13,14 – …when HE, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for HE will not speak on His own authority, but whatever HE hears HE will speak; and HE will tell you things to come. 14 HE will glorify Me, for HE will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
God is a SPIRIT
- John 4:23,24 – …the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 GOD IS SPIRIT, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Person of the Holy Spirit…
- The HOLY SPIRIT is a personality, not just an influence or power. Attributes of personality ascribed to Him:
- Personality attributes (Cont)
- Knowledge (I Corinthians 2:9-11); Will (I Corinthians 12:11); Mind (Romans 8:27); Love (Romans 15:30); Intelligence (Nehemiah 9:20); Grief (Ephesians 4:30).
- KNOWLEDGE
- I Corinthians 2:9-11 – But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the SPIRIT OF GOD.
- WILL
- 1 Corinthians 12:11 – But one and the same SPIRIT works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He WILLS.
- MIND
- Romans 8:27 – Now He who searches the hearts knows what the MIND of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
- LOVE
- Romans 15:30 – Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the LOVE of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me…
- INTELLIGENCE
- Nehemiah 9:20 – You also gave Your good SPIRIT to INSTRUCT (teach; give them insight; give understanding to; cause them to act wisely) them, and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.
FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
- Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 5:9 The FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control… (for the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth)..
EMPOWERMENT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
- Acts 1:8 – …receive power
- Luke 24:49 – … until you be endued with power…
- “Power from on high” is one of the evidences of a true baptism, and daily fillings with the HOLY SPIRIT.
- A life that witnesses of Christ, in all His miraculous power and wonderful beauty is one of the evidences of a Spirit-filled life.
- Ephesians 3:20 – Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the POWER that works in us.
- God willed that Christians of every generation should receive this POWER, and thereby glorify His Son.
Ephesians 3:21 – To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations…
HOW TO BE GUIDED
- 1) Present yourself to God, asking Him to FILL YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
- Guidance is a result of close fellowship. Those who live in close fellowship with the Lord, will be quick to hear and obey His voice.
- Romans 8:14 – For as many as are led by the SPIRIT of God, they are the sons of God.
- 2) As a result of being FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT, begin to pray in the SPIRIT.
- When our spirits, as distinct from our understanding, pray in the SPIRIT, often the Lord will impress His will upon our spirit.
- As the HOLY SPIRIT prays through us, we are assured we have “the mind of the SPIRIT” because “the SPIRIT intercedes… according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:27)
- 3) Spend time every day reading the BIBLE.
- The SPIRIT-FILLED Christian is led by the HOLY SPIRIT into deep communion and fellowship with God through His Word, the Bible, which is “the sword of the SPIRIT” – (Ephesians 6:17).
- The HOLY SPIRIT guides us by illuminating the Word of God as we read and meditate in it.
- Jesus said, “the Words that I speak to you, they are SPIRIT and they are LIFE” – John 6:63
- “Your WORD IS TRUTH” – John 17:17
- “When the SPIRIT OF TRUTH is comes, He will guide you into all the TRUTH… He will declare to you things that are to come.”
When we RECEIVE the HOLY SPIRIT, it is His ministry to reveal Jesus Christ and His Word to us, and in us. He draws the believer to Jesus, and glorifies Jesus, making known the will of God to us. (John 16:14)
- John 16:14 – “He (the HOLY SPIRIT) will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.” (Jesus)
- To be FILLED WITH POWER and GUIDED BY THE SPIRIT is evidence of a SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE! The SPIRIT-FILLED Christian knows the will of God for him, and his life is powerful and fruitful!
RECEIVING THE HOLY SPIRIT
- Acts 2:38,39 – Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
HOW?
- BIBLICAL INSTRUCTIONS TO THOSE SEEKING TO RECEIVE THE GIFT OF HOLY SPIRIT
- #1 – SEEK THE LORD, and ASK!
- SEEK THE LORD
- Isaiah 55:6-7 – SEEK the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.
7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
Let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; And to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
- Jeremiah 29:13 – And you will SEEK ME and FIND ME, when you search for Me with all your heart.
- Matthew 7:7-8 – “Ask, and it will be given to you; SEEK, and you will find; KNOCK, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks RECEIVES, and he who SEEKS finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
- Matthew 6:33 – SEEK first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
- Psalm 27:4,8 – One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I SEEK: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life… When You said, “SEEK MY FACE,” My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I WILL SEEK.”
- Psalm 34:10 …those who SEEK the Lord shall not lack any good thing.
- Luke 11:9-13 – 9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; SEEK, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks RECEIVES, and he who SEEKS finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened… 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give GOOD gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the HOLY SPIRIT to those who ask Him!”
- #2 – BELIEVE / HAVE FAITH
- JAIRUS
- Mark 5 – 22 And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet. 35 While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid; ONLY BELIEVE.”
- Luke 8:50 – when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; ONLY BELIEVE, and she will be made well.”
- Mark 9:20-26 – (Father bringing his son who had a deaf and dumb spirit) …immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. 21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 Jesus said to him, “If you can BELIEVE, all things are possible to him who BELIEVES.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I BELIEVE; help my unbelief!”25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him…
- JAIRUS
- HAVE FAITH IN GOD
- Mark 11:22-24 – So Jesus answered and said to them, “HAVE FAITH IN GOD. 23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but BELIEVES that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, BELIEVE that you receive them, and you will have them.
- Ask with faith
- The GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, like all other gifts is received by FAITH. The Word of God says that the HOLY SPIRIT is received “by the hearing with faith” (Galatians 3:2). Again it is written: “We receive the promise of the SPIRIT through FAITH” (Galatians 3:14)
- #3 OBEY
- Acts 5:32 – …we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the HOLY SPIRIT whom God has given to those who obey Him.”
- The HOLY SPIRIT is given to them that OBEY God! If we are to receive the GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, WE MUST OBEY! “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice” (I Samuel 15:22).
- John 14:15-17 – “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter), that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”
- After OBEDIENTLY taking the first step, repenting from sin and believing in Jesus Christ as your Savior, then you CAN receive this important, foundational part of the your spiritual life.
- #4 PRAYER / TARRYING – WAITING UPON THE LORD
- Luke 24:49 – “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but TARRY in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
- “Tarrying” means waiting on God in prayer (not waiting aimlessly in futile, timeless delay). Prayer is of great importance when seeking the BAPTISM WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, and must always be kept in mind and practiced.
- As you LIVE A PRAYERFUL LIFE, full of praise and worship – in communion with the Lord, it will become most natural to enter into the FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT. JESUS is the baptizer with the HOLY SPIRIT (Matthew 3:11). Contact Him in prayer. Seek Him. Wait upon Him, and He will send the promise of the Father into your life.
- #5 – BE CLEANSED FROM ALL KNOWN SIN
- I JOHN 1:9 – If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- #6 – SURRENDER YOURSELF COMPLETELY AND FULLY TO THE LORD
- #7 – BEGIN TO PRAISE GOD ALOUD FOR FILLING YOU WITH HIS SPIRIT REJOICE
- True faith is a faith that rejoices. This joyful faith in our hearts is manifested as we praise God for fulfilling His promise. We don’t have to persuade the Lord to keep His Word. He is longing to give you the GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Most seekers after the GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT find it a great help to begin to praise God out loud.
- Psalm 40:16 – Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; Let such as love Your salvation say continually, “The Lord be magnified!”
- #8 – RECEIVE THE GIFT
- Receiving the GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT is a definite act of taking and receiving. Some forget the act of receiving the baptism in the HOLY SPIRIT, and continue to ask, ask, ask, when the Lord wants them to RECEIVE. Jesus said, “Ask and IT WILL BE GIVEN”. When you have asked, receive what God is giving.
- #9 – AS YOU SURRENDER YOUR ALL TO THE LORD, BEGIN TO SPEAK, AS THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES YOU UTTERANCE.
ACTS 2
- On the Day of Pentecost “THEY” began to speak as the SPIRIT gave “THEM” utterance and expression.
- THE LAYING ON OF HANDS
- One of the frequent ways people receive the Baptism of the HOLY SPIRIT is during the laying on of hands. The new Christians at Samaria received the Baptism with the HOLY SPIRIT as Peter and John laid hands on them (Acts 8:17).
- The Ephesians received the HOLY SPIRIT as Paul laid hands on them (Acts 19:6). The apostle Paul himself received the Spirit as Ananias laid hands on him (Acts 9:17).
- HUNGER AND THIRST
- Matthew 5:6 – Blessed are those who hunger and thirst… for they SHALL BE FILLED. (Jesus)
