Even when living in a Babylonian environment and culture, Daniel and his friends were overcomer’s!
These days, in the midst of a worldly, Babylonian atmosphere that is prevalent all over the world – we can be, and are enabled to be overcomer’s through Jesus, too! Hallelujah!
SHADRACH, MESHACH, AND ABEDNEGO
Daniel 3:17-30 – …our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”... 20 And he commanded certain mighty men of valor who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and cast them into the burning fiery furnace… 22 because the king’s command was urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.”25 “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” …
26 Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here.” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire. 27 … and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.
28 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His Angel and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God! 29 Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; because there is no other God who can deliver like this.” 30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego in the province of Babylon.
DANIEL
Daniel 6:1-28 – 3 Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm… 4 So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him. 5 Then these men said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.”
6 So these governors and satraps thronged before the king, and said thus to him: “King Darius, live forever! 7 All the governors of the kingdom, the administrators and satraps, the counselors and advisors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm decree, that whoever petitions any god or man for thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions... 10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.
11 Then these men assembled and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. 12 And they went before the king, and spoke concerning the king’s decree: “Have you not signed a decree that every man who petitions any god or man within thirty days, except you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions?” The king answered and said, “The thing is true… 13 So they answered and said before the king, “That Daniel, who is one of the captives from Judah, does not show due regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.” … 16 So the king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. But the king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.” … 19 Then the king arose very early in the morning and went in haste to the den of lions. 20 And when he came to the den, he cried out with a lamenting voice to Daniel. The king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?”
21 Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever! 22 My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.” 23 Now the king was exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no injury whatever was found on him, because he believed in his God.
24 And the king gave the command, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions—them, their children, and their wives; and the lions overpowered them, and broke all their bones in pieces before they ever came to the bottom of the den.
25 Then King Darius wrote: To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. 26 I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God, And steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, and His dominion shall endure to the end. 27 He delivers and rescues, and He works signs and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. 28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
THE FALL OF BABYLON
Not only in past history was Babylon judged and destroyed, but there is a Babylonian regime that will fall, as found in Revelation 17.
Revelation 17:1-18 – …“Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”
…and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the filthiness of her fornication. 5 And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6 I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.
8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9 “Here is the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. 10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must continue a short time. 11 The beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to perdition.12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast.
14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”
15 Then he said to me, “The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman whom you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.”
Revelation 18:1-24 – After these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was illuminated with his glory. 2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.”
4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. 5 For her sins have reached to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. 6 Render to her just as she rendered to you, and repay her double according to her works; in the cup which she has mixed, mix double for her. 7 In the measure that she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’ 8 Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.
The World Mourns Babylon’s Fall
9 “The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment has come.’
11 “And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: 12 merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble; 13 and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and souls of men. 14 The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things which are rich and splendid have gone from you, and you shall find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, 16 and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! 17 For in one hour such great riches came to nothing.’ Every shipmaster, all who travel by ship, sailors, and as many as trade on the sea, stood at a distance 18 and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘What is like this great city?’ 19 “They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate.’ 20 “Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her!”
Finality of Babylon’s Fall
21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and shall not be found anymore. 22 The sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore. 23 The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were slain on the earth.”

CULTURE AND VALUES
There has been an obvious shift in values and culture over the last 60-75 years! There’s been rejection of our traditional & Biblical values and principles of truth! Absolute values and truths are no longer considered absolute by many these days! We are experiencing a Post-Christian society that is increasingly becoming more pagan, resulting in chaos and confusion not only with those in the world, but sadly some in the churches as well. It is a sick condition. Injustice is everywhere. Truth and honesty is scorned by many, not upheld. Evil is exonerated.
DANIEL
In the Book Daniel, where Daniel and his friends had been taken captive, and were living in captivity. Their homeland had been destroyed, and they were taken captive as prisoners of war to Babylon. Why were they there in Babylon, taken into captivity? Because of Israel’s sinful rejection of God, and the resulting dreadful consequences for doing that.
Is it possible to live for God in a pagan society? Yes, Daniel and his friends did. The story of Daniel is a perfect example of how you and I can survive and thrive in a secular and pagan society.
REJECTING GOD’S WORD
Babylon is now increasing in our nation because we have cut the Scriptures out of our lives!
Special note: We desperately need the Scriptures in our personal lives, homes, families, schools, etc. Let’s be people of the Word of God – read and study it, live by, and share it. Let’s receive the encouragement to read through the Bible over and over again, on a yearly basis…
One of the reasons God sent the enemy, and allowed Israel to be destroyed was because their leadership rejected His Word.
Daniel 1:1 – In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
King Jehoiakim was the King that destroyed the scrolls of prophet Jeremiah 2 times, and threw them into the fire– (Jeremiah 36:21,22,27). He rejected the Word of the Lord that the Lord was going to bring judgment. Whether he liked it or not – God allowed judgment to come!
Special note: Many in our nation have also rejected God’s Word, and thrown the Bible and prayer out of homes, schools, courts, government… etc… Why are we in the mess we are in? People have rejected the Word of the Lord! They have cut the Bible out of their lives! Many want to live like the world, and be conformed to the worldly image, instead of Jesus’s image. Where has the concept of holiness (separation from the world gone)? Many of God’s people want to be like the world, and act like the world these days – instead of desiring to live holy, Christ-centered lives that are pleasing to the Lord.
Daniel 1:2 – And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
What is the land of Shinar” – Genesis 11:1,2,9 – the place where the tower of Babel was erected was “Shinar” (Babel means “confusion” – Babylon and Babel are the same word). The characteristics of Babylon are prevalent world-wide these days!
BABYLON
Babylon was a spectacular and modern place (possibly similar to some of the famous places in the world these days), with spectacular buildings and hanging gardens, and so forth – but it was secular, pagan, very evil and sinful.
Babylon represents an evil system that opposes the Kingdom of God.
THE SPIRIT OF BABYLON
The “The Spirit of Babylon” is still prevalent in the world today, although the actual city was destroyed.
Special note: Babylon was destroyed By God! We might be alive and living in Babylonian type times worldwide at the end of this age, but don’t let the spirit of Babylon get inside of you! Although Babylon was physically destroyed, there is a Babylonian spirit prevalent these days that is displeasing to God! There is a spirit of the city of Babylon that continues in the world today. Let’s shine as light and salt, in the midst of hard times – like Daniel and his friends. Our mission isn’t just to exit quickly before God’s time – we need to live for God in these troubled times, We are in the world, but not of the world!
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT OF BABYLON
CONFUSION
Some of the characteristics of the spirit of Babylon are confusion and chaos. It has infiltrated every area of society. Through the media and many other means people are being brainwashed and inundated with worldly, anti-Christ philosophies and lifestyles. Confusion in the political realm, confusion of genders… etc. God is not the author of confusion – He is a God of order and design. The enemy is out to destroy God’s order and design, and create confusion and chaos which leads to destruction!
I Corinthians 14:33 – For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. T
Special note: In Genesis 1-2 we see that God created order out of chaos. The Babylonian systems are designed by the enemy to try to bring chaos out of order.
PRIDE
Pride is the exaltation, and worship of self. It is a self-centered attitude that seeks to promote self, is selfish, and demonstrates an overly high opinion of oneself and an inflated feeling of self-importance.
In the story of the building of theTower of Babel what did they do? They wanted to make a name for themself!
Genesis 11:4 – And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves…
Illustration: Titanic – The “Unsinkable Ship”? There were those that thought the Titanic was unsinkable, and some were even quoted as saying that they thought that “God Himself couldn’t sink it!”. However, their prideful and arrogant boasting was proven wrong when it hit an iceberg and sank, and around 1500 lives were lost on April 15, 1912.
It has been said that “Pride is the mother of all sins”. Boasting and the PRIDE of success is the opposite of humility. Exalting yourself and what you want to do over what pleases the Lord is a dreadful trap of the enemy! There are many illustrations in Scripture of pride and its dreadful consequences: Adam and Eve and their disobedience; Pharoah’s hard and un-submissive heart; Nebuchnezzar’s downfall; Saul and his jealousy; David’s sin; Jehoiakim’s rebellion; Herod and self-exaltation; Judas and his selfish love of money; etc…
Special note: Self-pity is another suble pride trap. We can be proud that we have suffered so much, and we exalt suffering, and the fact that we “deserve this or that because of our suffering”, with a “poor me“ and “feel sorry for myself“ attitude and a persecuted complex!
Proverbs 16:18 – Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 29:23- A man’s pride will bring him low... (AMP) – A man’s pride and sense of self-importance will bring him down…; (NLT) – Pride ends in humiliation…
There’s only one great “I AM” and that is Jesus, none other!
John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Philippians 2:9-11 – Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
REBELLION
Genesis 11:4 – Genesis 11:4 – And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves… lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
Special note: This was in contradiction and rebellion to the Lord’s instructions in Genesis 1:28 – “… to be fruitful and multiply and to fill and subdue it” – NOT just stay in one area to make a name for themself! If they were scattered they wouldn’t build a great city – they had to stay together and be united to build their tower.
We live in a BABYLONIAN culture that teaches rebellion against authority – in the church, the Bible, government, education, law enforcement, etc.
THE AGENDA OF THE SPIRIT OF BABYLON
IT SEEKS TO DOMINATE YOU
We need to be aware of, and recognize the strategic agenda of the Babylonian culture. It is a Satanic kingdom – the kingdom of darkness! It is very organized, and it’s strategy is to destroy the kingdom of God and His people. It seeks to dominate. It is a “take-over” spirit – in religion; politics;sexality; church; children; education; etc… It is not satisfied until it dominates every area of your life, and causes its perverse ways to seem to be the norm!
Special note: Let’s refuse to be dominated by evil, and an idolatrous system that is not glorifying to the Lord! Let’s be like Daniel and his friends that boldly went against the status quo of their peers! They were unwilling to violate their faith and worship false gods! They resisted the brainwashing of the BABYLONIAN system of their culture, and were steadfast in their faith!
IT SEEKS TO BRAINWASH YOU
The enemy tried to teach Daniel and his friends the language and literature of the Chaldeans and cause them to lose their heritage, worship false gods, etc. Tragically these days, there are many even in some churches that are bowing to the “brainwashing” of society: rejecting the authority of Scripture, denying the Virgin birth; confuisng sexuality; aborting babies; etc. Our adversary the devil is to be resisted (James 4:7), not bowed down to and catered to!
IT SEEKS TO ALTER you
The enemy is out to de-masculinize the sex of men, to mutilate and alter body parts to fit into the agenda of BABYLON. and change words to fit their agenda. It is trying to turn people from THE TRUTH to a. self-truth system where truth is only relative and subjective – NOT ABSOLUTE…
IT SEEKS TO RENAME YOU
The enemy gave new names to Daniel and his friends. He tried to change their Jewish names to those that exalted the false gods of BABYLON! However, in spite of all that – the book of Daniel is still called “Daniel!“
Special note: The enemy doesn’t want us to be Christians, and bear the name of Jesus Christ. There are many these days that are falling away from their faith, denying the name of Jesus, and being called by other names that aren’t glorifying to the Lord! We need to know who we are, and hold to our faith. Even though we live in a Babylonian culture, let’s NOT allow it’s agenda to change us, and to get inside us, and mold us into someone who is worldly through ungodly pressures exerted upon us by the enemy.
IT SEEKS TO TEMPT YOU
Daniel and his friends were tempted to eat like the Babylonian people. However, they were determined not to eat of the kings tempting foods. God honored them for the stand they took! There are things of this world that can be tempting to us – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (I John 2:15-17).
Daniel and his friends purposed in their heart to take a righteous stand! They didn’t want to eat of foods that had been sacrificed to the false gods of BABYLYON! The enemy tempts us to compromise our values and be like everyone else around us in the world! If we think that “it looks good, and smells good… so it must be good” – beware, it could be a subtle trap of the enemey. Don’t COMPROMISE your values! Remember – “compromise leads to capture”! “The enemy doesn’t care how long it take to get to you, just as long as you continue to move slowly in his diretion through your quiet compromises!” (1)
I John 2:15-17 – Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
IT SEEKS TO DESTROY YOU
John 10:10 – The thief (satan) does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. (JESUS)
I Corinthians 10:10 – …as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
Psalm 17:4 – ..By the word of Your lips, I have kept away from the paths of the destroyer.
BABYLON WAS and will be JUDGED BY GOD
Isaiah 13:19 – Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
Revelation 14:8 – And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she (she’s pictured as a prostitute) made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
Revelation 17:5 – And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots and Abominations Of The Earth.
Special note: The church, the bride of Christ in the New Testament is likened to a woman. Satan’s follower’s are his deceptive substitute, involved with prostitution and harlotry, immorality and perversion. The enemy is out to counterfeit and deceive people.
JESUS
JESUS and the truth that He came to proclaim is the answer to the unrighteous mess that is in BABYLONIAN conditions of this world!
Let’s not live by worldly standards taught by the BABYLONIAN culture, but by the standards and principles taught in the Bible!
In the end, Jesus and HIs faithful church are the winners! (Revelation 17:14) We see the fall of BABYLON in Revelation 17 & 18, comes right before the Marriage Supper of the Lamb in Revelation 19.
Revelation 17:14 – These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”
Revelation 19:1-3 – 19 After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to the Lord our God! 2 For true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.” 3 Again they said, “Alleluia! Her smoke rises up forever and ever!”
