THANKSGIVING

What the Bible has to say regarding the giving of thanks is very revealing as to why it should be an integral part of our lives, now and forever…

This Thanksgiving season, as we considered what the Bible has to say about the importance of “thanksgiving”, we were reminded of special insights about maintaining THANKFULNESS AND THE ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE that we will share in the following verses…

Since thanksgiving is not just a once a year event, but to be a continual habit, let’s follow the Thanksgiving Season with continued encouragement to always be grateful!

PROMISES FULFILLED

Deuteronomy 8:10 – When you have eaten and are full, THEN you SHALL BLESS THE LORD YOUR GOD for the good land which He has given you.

  • Special insight: When we have been abundantly blessed, and God has faithfully fulfilled His promises and answered our prayers, we are to remember to bless the Lord for ALL OF HIS BLESSINGS! The “good land” was the “promised land”! God has shown HIs goodness to us in so many ways. He wants us to recognize that, and to bless Him for His blessings. He doesn’t want us to take it for granted, or pridefully think it was because we are so good or deserving. He is the one that is good, and the giver of good things in abundance for us to enjoy!

THE REVEALED WILL OF GOD

I Thessalonians 5:18 – In everything GIVE THANKS; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  • Special insight: This is a life-time challenge! In the midst of everything that we go through in life, we are to maintain a thankful, grateful heart! Sometimes it is more difficult to ascertain the will of God. This is a very clear revelation of God’s will. He wants us always and forever to be thankful!

Ephesians 5:19,20 Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

THANKSGIVING FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION

Psalm 79:13 – So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, will give You THANKS forever; We will show forth Your praise to all generations.

Luke 1:49-55 – …He that is mighty has done to me great things… His mercy is on the that fear Him from generation to generation... He has filled the hungry with good things... As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed forever.

  • Special insight: Our Good Shepherd wants us give thanks forever. It something to be done from generation to generation – it is cross-generational, not just one generation.

THANKSGIVING IS A GOOD WORK

Psalm 92:1 – It is good to GIVE THANKS to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High.

Hebrews 13:15 – Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

  • Special insight: The giving of thanks is a good thing to do. It is one of the good works, and good fruit that God is looking for in HIs people.

THE RIGHTEOUS GIVE THANKS AT THE REMEMBRANCE OF HIS NAME

Psalm 97:12 – Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, And GIVE THANKS at the remembrance of His holy name.

Psalm 140:13 – Surely the righteous shall GIVE THANKS to Your name; The upright shall dwell in Your presence.

  • Special insight: Notice the call and response progression…. The righteous were encouraged to give thanks. Then the Psalmist declared “surely they shall give thanks!” They responded positively to the call to give thanks!
  • Special insight: They give thanks in remembrance of His holy name. We are not only to remember the revelation of His names, but specifically His HOLY NAME. Jesus taught us to pray to our Father – “hallowed be your Name”. In the revelation of the Lord’s throne room in Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation, 4:8 – the seraphim and four living creatures are saying – “holy, holy, holy” is the Lord of hosts, Lord God Almighty. We need to walk worthy of His holy name in righteousness, by living holy lives separated from the world, not being conformed to it! (Romans 12:1-2). I Peter 1:15 -16 –  …as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
  • Special insight: Those in right standing dwell in the presence of the Lord. The Lord dwells in the praises of His people. As we maintain praise and thanksgiving, the presence of the Lord is manifest.

THANKSGIVING IS THE ATMOSPHERE OF HEAVEN

Psalm 100:4 — Enter into His gates with THANKSGIVINGAnd into His courts with praise. BE THANKFUL to Himand bless His name.

Psalm 95:2 – Let us come before His presence with THANKSGIVING; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

Revelation 7:12 – saying: “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdomTHANKSGIVING and honor and power and might, Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”

  • Special insight: Jesus taught us to pray – “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” – Matthew 6:10. As we thank, praise, bless, and glorify the Lord, that is one of the ways His kingdom is revealed through our lives.

DON’T FORGET HIS BLESSINGS AND BENEFITS

Psalm 68:19Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! Selah

Psalm 103:2Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:…

Proverbs 10:22The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.

Psalm 107:8 – Oh, that men would GIVE THANKS to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

Psalm 97:12 – … GIVE THANKS at the remembrance of His holy name.

  • Special insight: Let’s not to be forgetful of his goodness, and abundant blessings. The greatest riches are eternal ones. The riches of God’s grace, mercy, forgiveness, faith, love, peace, etc. are priceless! Jesus told us to “lay up treasure in heaven” – Matthew 6:20. Material matters are only temporary, at best.

THANKSGIVING FOR VICTORIES AND TRIUMPH

I Corinthians 15:57 – But THANKS BE TO GOD, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 .Corinthians 2:14THANKS BE TO GOD who ALWAYS LEADS US IN (CAUSES US TO) TRIUMPH in Christ…

THE SACRIFICE OF THANKSGIVING

Leviticus 22:29 – And when you offer a SACRIFICE OF THANKSGIVING to the Lord, offer it of your own free will.

  • Special insight: Our willingness to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving is important, and notable.

Jonah 2:9 – But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of THANKSGIVING; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.”

  • Special insight: In Jonah chapter 2 Jonah is desperately crying out to the Lord in the midst of great distress. God was His only hope! He finds himself in the belly of a big fish, with seaweed wrapped around his head and other dreadful circumstances. He is repentant of his disobedience, and now he is willing to do what He has said He would do…

PAYING OUR VOWS AND PROMISES

Psalm 50:14 – Offer to God thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.

  • Special insight: Thanksgiving is an offering. We need to willingly follow through with our promises, dedication, and commitment to the Lord to be thankful even when that is challenged due to hardness and circumstantial difficulties.

PROCLAIM THE WORKS OF THE LORD WITH THANKSGIVING

Psalm 26:7 – That I may proclaim with the voice of THANKSGIVING, and tell of all Your wondrous works.

MAGNIFY THE LORD WITH THANKFUL SONGS

Psalm 69:30 – I will praise the name of God with a song, And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.

Psalm 147:7Sing to the Lord with THANKSGIVING; Sing praises on the harp to our God,

Isaiah 51:3 – For the Lord will comfort Zion, He will comfort all her waste places; He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; Joy and gladness will be found in it, THANKSGIVING and the voice of melody.

  • Special insight: Zion is a picture of God’s dwelling place in His people (Psalm 9:11; Isaiah 51:16). God is restoring His people. He is making them to become like the garden of Eden. It was a beautiful place in HIs presence of great joy, gladness, thanksgiving and songs of praise.

THANK GOD FOR HIS MERCY

Psalm 107:1 – Oh, GIVE THANKS to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

  • Special insight: There is something that resonates in the heart of God in a special when we praise Him for HIs mercy, because He is a merciful God. When King Jehoshaphat sent singers before the army “praising the Lord for His mercy endures forever”, there was a mighty, miraculous victory. (2 Chronicles 20)

Lamentations 3:22-25Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him…

Psalm 23:6 – Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

MANY THANKSGIVINGS

2 Corinthians 9:11 – while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes THANKSGIVING through us to God. For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through MANY THANKSGIVINGS to God…

2 Corinthians 4:15 – For all things are for your sakes, that GRACE, having spread through the many, may cause THANKSGIVING to abound to the glory of God.

  • Special insight: We want to see many thanksgings multiplied among many people, for the glory of God! The more thanksgivings the better!

PRAY WITH THANKSGIVING

Philippians 4:6 – Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, WITH THANKSGIVING, let your requests be made known to God

  • Special insight: As we reflect upon God’s goodness, and many answers to prayer with thanksgiving, it helps strengthen our faith to believe for answers to prayers as we pray. It is God’s will, and it pleases HIm when we pray with THANKSGIVING.

ABOUNDING IN THANKSGIVING

Colossians 2:7 – …rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with THANKSGIVING.

  • Special insight: Thanksgiving is part of the root system that helps us to be built up and edified. It helps establish our faith. We need to always continue in THANKSGIVING, as we have been taught in Scripture.
