THE HOLY SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE / WORKS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

THE WATER OF LIFE

Isaiah 55:1-3 – “Ho! Everyone who THIRSTS, COME to the waters; And you who have no money, come, buy and eat… without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? LISTEN CAREFULLY TO ME, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in ABUNDANCE. INCLINE YOUR EAR, and come to Me. HEAR, and your soul shall live…

Revelation 22:17 – And the SPIRIT and the bride say, “COME!” And let him who HEARS say, “COME!” And let him who THIRSTS COME. Whoever desires, (is willing) let him take the WATER OF LIFE FREELY.

Matthew 5:6Blessed are those who HUNGER AND THIRST for righteousness, for THEY SHALL BE FILLED.

John 7:37-38 – Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone THIRSTS, let him COME TO ME and DRINK38 He who BELIEVES IN ME, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of LIVING WATER.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the SPIRIT, whom those BELIEVING in Him would receive …

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GIVEN BY OUR FATHER TO THOSE WHO ASK

Luke 11:9-13 – “So I say to you, ASK, and it will be given to you; SEEK, and you will find; KNOCK, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who ASKS RECEIVES, and he who SEEKS FINDS, and to him who KNOCKS IT WILL BE OPENED. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the HOLY SPIRIT to those who ask Him!”

HOLY SPIRIT Comes To Give POWER To The Early Church  (Acts 2:1-21)

GREAT COMMISSION

Jesus told His disciples to go and share the Good News about how Jesus died on the cross for our sins, was buried and was raised from the dead on the third day. The disciples were also to teach people how to be followers of Jesus and to obey His commandments. (Matthew 28:19-20. )

Matthew 28:19-20GO therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the HOLY SPIRIT, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…

PROMISES

Before Jesus ascended, He PROMISED that He would always be with His disciples to the end of the age…   (Matthew 28:20).

He also told them about the PROMISE of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:4-5)

Matthew 28:20 …teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I AM WITH YOU alwayseven to the end of the age.” Amen.

Acts 1:4-5 – …being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the PROMISE of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the HOLY SPIRIT not many days from now.”

DOING GOD’S WORK REQUIRES HIS POWER!

Acts 1:8 – But you shall RECEIVE POWER when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

  • Special note: Since Jesus knew that the disciples could grow discouraged and lonely when He returned to heaven, He gave them several very special PROMISES. He knew that the disciples could not follow His instructions in their own strength, and by themselves

GOD IS ABLE TO EMPOWER HIS PEOPLE TO DO HIS WORK!

The following verses show some of the ways the Lord empowers us.

Jesus taught us to pray: Matthew 6:13 – …deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the POWER and the glory forever. Amen.

  • Special note: Jesus revealed and acknowledged our source of POWER!

I Corinthians 4:20 – For the kingdom of God is not in word but in POWER.

  • Special note: The kingdom of God is not in futile, empty words – but in power... The truth of our words need to be backed up with God’s manifest POWER!

Micah 3:8 – …truly I am full of POWER  by the SPIRIT OF THE LORD

  • Special note: Can WE SAY with prophet Micah that “we are FULL OF POWER BY THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD”?

2 Timothy 1:7 – For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of POWER and of love and of a sound mind.

  • Special note: God gives us POWER! The spirit of fear does not come from the Lord!

Hebrews 4:12 – For the WORD OF GOD is living and POWERFUL…

  • Special note: The Lord equips us with His Word, which is a powerful weapon. The power of HIS WORD is life-transforming, and brings life...

I Peter 1:5 – …who are kept by the POWER of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

  • Special note: The POWER OF GOD is activated by faith.

2 Peter 1:3 – …as His DIVINE POWER has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue…

  • Special note: God’s POWER gives us all the empowerment that is needed to live a life of godliness that is pleasing to HIm.

Acts 4:33 – And with GREAT POWER the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  • Special note: The apostles ministered with manifestation of GREAT POWER, not just a minimal amount…

Acts 6:8 – Stephen, full of faith and POWER, did great wonders and signs among the people.

  • Special note: Once again note the connection between faith and power. Being full of faith — Stphen was full of power. How do we receive faith? Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word (Romans 1:17). Faith comes by the WORD, so the Word of God is our source of POWER! Jesus said, “The WORDS that I speak unto you, they are SPIRIT and they are LIFE (John 6:63)

Romans 1:16I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the POWER of God to salvation for everyone who believes…

  • Special note: The good news Jesus came to bring us is POWERFUL to those who BELIEVE.

I Corinthians 1:24 – …Christ the POWER of God and the wisdom of God.

  • Special note: Notice one of the names of God – “Christ” used in this verse, which refers to the HOLY SPIRIT. Used again in Colossians 1:27 – “Christ” in you, the hope of glory.

Ephesians 1:18-20 – the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His POWER toward us who believe, according to the working of His MIGHTY POWER 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead…

  • Special note: Notice the descriptions of POWER — IT IS EXCEEDINGLY GREAT AND MIGHTY!

Philippians 3:10 – …that I may know Him and the POWER of His resurrection…

  • Special note: Paul counted all else as nothing compared to knowing God and experiencing His POWER!

Ephesians 3:20 – Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the POWER that works in us

  • Special note: There is a POWER greater than we can imagine or think that is at work WITHIN US! HALLELUJAH!

Ephesians 6:10 – Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the POWER of His might.

Colossians 1:11 – …strengthened with all might, according to His glorious POWERfor all patience and longsuffering with joy

  • Special note: HIs POWER and might within us the a source of our STRENGTH! It produces joy.

2 Thessalonians 1:11 – Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with POWER

  • Special note: Once again notice the connection of FAITH AND POWER.

Revelation 19:1,6 – After these things I heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia! Salvation and glory and honor and POWER belong to the Lord our God! … I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God OMNIPOTENT reigns!

  • Special note: “Omipotent” – means “All-Powerful”. This is an amazing revelation of God’s GREAT POWER! He is “All-Powerful” — in other words, He has enough POWER for every need, and all HOLY SPIRIT POWER comes from and through Him!

There is ANOTHER POWER at work in thIS world — the POWER OF DARKNESS, THE POWER OF THE DEVIL!

Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the POWER of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love

Acts 26:18 – …to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the POWER of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.’

The Spirit of the Lord is greater than the spirit of the Devil, and the manifest works and fruit of both of them are very obvious! (I John 4;4; John 8:44; Galatians 5:18-23)

THE WONDERFUL GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Jesus PROMISED that God was going to send the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT. God’s HOLY SPIRIT would live inside the heart of each of Jesus’ disciples. This way, Jesus’ presence would always be with them wherever they went.

The same instructions Jesus gave to His disciples before He returned to heaven are for His followers today. If you and I are believers we need to be sharing with others the Good News about Jesus. We can have the HOLY SPIRIT living in us giving us the POWER to do God’s Work until He returns.

OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST

Acts 2:1-4 – On the day of Pentecostall the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT and began speaking in other languages as the HOLY SPIRIT gave them this ability.

  • Special note: Who FILLED the believers? (The Holy Spirit) What did He help them to do? (Speak in other languages) (Verse 4)  God kept His PROMISE and He sent the gift of the HOLY SPIRITon the Day of Pentecost.

On that very day the people witnessed God’s PROMISE that He made so many years ago come true. God kept His PROMISE and sent the HOLY SPIRIT. Since that time people who receive Jesus in their hearts can receive the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT.

Acts 2:38-39 – Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

  • Special note: The gift of the Holy Spirit was not just for them to experience, but for all of us throughout all time and ages, as many as the Lord calls.

We don’t see flames of fire resting on our heads or hear loud wind noises but we can receive the power of the HOLY SPIRIT to enable us to live lives that please God. The HOLY SPIRIT teaches us all things and reminds us of everything Jesus taught us.

The Lord also wants to FILL us with His HOLY SPIRIT. How would the disciples have the POWER to obey His instructions? (God was going to send the HOLY SPIRIT to live in their hearts…)

EMPOWERMENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

JESUS WAS EMPOWERED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Luke 4:1,18Jesus, being FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT… “The SPIRIT OF THE LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Acts 10:38 – God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the HOLY SPIRIT and with POWER, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

Romans 1:4 – …declared to be the Son of God with POWER according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.

THE APOSTLES WERE EMPOWERED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Acts 1:8 – “You will receive POWER when the HOLY SPIRIT comes on you. And you will be my witnesses, in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Jesus)

Acts 2:4,8 – And they were ALL FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance… Then Peter, FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, said…

Acts 4:31 – And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

Acts 9:17 – And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.”

Acts 13:9 – Then Saul, who also is called Paul, FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT, looked intently at him 10 and said…

Or… SOME ARE FILLED WITH THE WORLD, FLESH, AND DEVIL!

Acts 5:3 – But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan FILLED YOUR HEART to lie to the Holy Spirit…?

Acts 13:45 – …when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were FILLED WITH ENVY; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.

Acts 19:29 – …the whole city was  FILLED WITH CONFUSION…

  • Special note: God is not the source of confusion (I Corinthians 14:33).

Romans 1:28-32 – …even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being FILLED with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickednesscovetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

DON’T GIVE PLACE TO THE DEVIL, AND GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ephesians 4:25-3225 Therefore, putting away lying, “Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor… do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the DEVIL. 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 30 And do not grieve the HOLY SPIRIT of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice32 And BE KIND to one another, TENDERHEARTED, FORGIVING one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

WALK AND LIVE IN THE SPIRIT, NOT IN THE LUSTS OF THE FLESH

Galatians 5:1,16, 19-21 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage… WALK IN THE SPIRIT, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will NOT inherit the kingdom of God.

BE FILLED WITH THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Galatians 5: 22 But the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we LIVE IN THE SPIRIT, let us also WALK IN THE SPIRIT. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Romans 15:14 – I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are FULL OF GOODNESS, FILLED with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.

Colossians 1:9 – …we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may BE FILLED with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

Philippians 1:11 – …being FILLED with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Ephesians 3:19 – …to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be FILLED with all the FULLNESS of God.

WE CAN OVERCOME AND LIVE VICTORIOUS LIVES BECAUSE THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GREATER THAN THE UNHOLY SPIRIT OF THE DEVIL

I John 4:4 – You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you IS GREATER than he who is in the world.

WE ARE WORKERS TOGETHER WITH GOD, CREATED FOR GOOD WORKS

Ephesians 2:10 – For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

2 Corinthians 6:1 – We then, as workers together with Him

BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Ephesians 5:18 – And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

THE HOLY SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE!

The HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS US to live a victorious life, overcoming the world, flesh, and the devil!
