RUNNING THE RACE ALL THE WAY INTO ETERNITY – SEPTEMBER 15, 2024

Keep running your race until you reach the finish line!

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NIV) – 1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (MSG) – 24-25 You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally.26-27 I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No lazy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.

Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV) – No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

Philippians 3:12-14 (MSG) – I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.

3 THINGS THAT ARE NEEDED TO FINISH THE RACE

1.Preparation is needed

The marathon distance of 42,195 meters (26 miles 385 yards) is almost comparable to the distance from Tarlac City to Angeles City in the Philippines.

  • Hebrews 12:1 – Therefore, …let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (NIV)
    • …let us strip off every weight that slows us down (NLT)
    • …So we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life’s marathon race with passion and determination,… (TPT)

2.Perseverance and Endurance are needed.

  • Hebrews 12:1 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us (NIV)
    • And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. (NLT)
  • What is the difference?
    • Endurance is having the ability and stamina to handle difficult things. In essence, short-term pain for long-term gains. (Pagtitiis)
    • Perseverance, on the other hand, is continuing on a journey despite the obstacles, to reach a destination or goal. Athletes practice all the time to improve and become the best they can be. (Pagtiyatiyaga) – Linkedin.com

3.Focus is needed

  • Hebrews 12:2 – fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NIV)
  • Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. (MSG)

1 Timothy 6:12 (GNT)– Run your best in the race of faith, and win eternal life for yourself; for it was to this life that God called you when you firmly professed your faith before many witnesses.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 (NLT) – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 (MSG) – This is the only race worth running. I’ve run hard right to the finish, believed all the way. All that’s left now is the shouting—God’s applause! Depend on it, he’s an honest judge. He’ll do right not only by me, but by everyone eager for his coming.

Keep running your race until you reach the finish line!
