RAISING A STANDARD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS – (J)
Isaiah 59:19 – So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will LIFT UP A STANDARD AGAINST HIM.
- Special note: Raising a standard against the enemy is part of the wonderful work of the HOLY SPIRIT! God is looking for HUMBLE PEOPLE to bless. HUMILITY brings exaltation. Pride, arrogance, and haughtiness go before a fall. Raising a RIGHTEOUS STANDARD OF HUMILITY brings exaltation in a nation, but the sin of PRIDE brings destruction.
When we are cleansed through the blood of Jesus (I John 1:7) our sins are forgiven, and His RIGHTEOUSNESS imputed to us. He takes away our UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, and exchanges it for HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS (2 Corinthians 5:21).
THE STANDARD OF HUMILITY
BE HUMBLE
Humility is a requirement for God’s Blessing. He resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Micah 6:8 – He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord REQUIRE of you – but to do justly, to love [mercy, and TO WALK HUMBLY with your God?
James 4:6 – But he gives more grace. Wherefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.
We need to MAINTAIN HUMILITY. Maintaining a TEACHABLE, FLEXIBLE ATTITUDE is so helpful. We are not to think more highly of ourself than we ought to think…
Romans 12:3 – I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
- Special note: It is so dangerous and dreadful when people get on their high horse, and think they are so much better, and know so much more than others. We are admonished in Scripture to esteem others better than ourself (Philippians 2:3).
Proverbs 21:4 – An HIGH LOOK, and a PROUD HEART, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.
Philippians 2:3 – Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit (PRIDE; vainglory; to impress others) , but in LOWLINESS of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
Psalm 101:5 – him that has a HIGH LOOK and a PROUD (arrogant/conceited/thinking they are better – look down on than others) HEART will not I suffer (tolerate/ abide, or put up with/endure/permit).
Proverbs 6:16-18; 8:13 – These six things does the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A PROUD LOOK, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,18 A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief… The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
PRIDE AND ARROGANCE and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.
Proverbs 16:5 – Every one that is PROUD IN HEART is an abomination to the Lord:
- Special note: The Lord hates PRIDE – it is AN ABOMINATION to Him!
DON’T BE PROUD
Proverbs 16:18 – Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Luke 18:14 – …every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. (Also Matthew 23:12.)
James 4:10 – Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.
- Special note: It’s nice to have fun, but so important to avoid laughing at others, or being scornful. Making fun of, criticizing, or making your friend or neighbor look stupid and magnifying their mistakes can not only be hurtful, but destroy relationships.
HANNAH’S PROPHETIC PRAYER – DON’T BE PROUD AND ARROGANT.
I Samuel 2:3 – Talk no more so very PROUDLY; Let NO ARROGANCE come from your mouth, For the Lord is the God of knowledge; And by Him actions are weighed.
JESUS’S EXAMPLE AND TEACHINGs
Philippians 2:8 – …being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Matthew 11:28-30 – “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle (meek) and lowly (HUMBLE) in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (JESUS)
Matthew 5:5 – “Blessed are the meek (HUMBLE), for they shall inherit the earth.” (JESUS)
Matthew 21:5 – …‘Behold, your King is coming to you, LOWLY (HUMBLE), and sitting on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector
Luke 18: 9-14 – Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ 13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
WE ARE TO BE HUMBLE SERVANTS
Let’s determine to HUMBLY SERVE one another, and BE HUMBLE SERVANTS – (Mark 9:35).
(Again) Micah 6:8 – He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you – but to do justly, to love [mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
(Again) James 4:10 – Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord…
Mark 9:35And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and SERVANT OF ALL.” (Mark 10:44)
Matthew 18:4 – Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 23:12 – And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall HUMBLE HIMSELF shall be exalted (also Luke 18:14).
Colossians 3:12 – Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, HUMBLENESS of mind, MEEKNESS, longsuffering…

HUMILITY is a qualification of elders – PRIDE leads to condemnation

PRIDE is of this world – not of our Heavenly Father
- (Again) I John 2:15-17 – Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the PRIDE OF LIFE, is not of the Father, but is of the world.17 And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides forever.
There are consequences, and punishment for those who are PROUD

- 2 Timothy 3:1-5 – know this, that in the LAST DAYS perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, BOASTERS, PROUD, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, [b]unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.
PRIDE leads to fighting and disputes
- I Timothy 6:3-5 – If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;4 HE IS PROUD, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and STRIFES OF WORDS, whereof comes envy, STRIFE, railings, evil surmisings,5 PERVERSE DISPUTINGS of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw yourself.
HUMBLE SUBJECTION to one another brings exaltation; God resists those who are PROUD.
- (Again) I Peter 5:5,6 Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists THE PROUD, and gives GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. HUMBLE YOURSELVES therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may EXALT YOU in due time:

KING NEBUCHADNEZZAR HUMBLED
Daniel 4:30-36 The king spoke, saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by MY mighty power and for the honor of MY majesty?” 31 While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven: “King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed from you! 32 And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.”33 That very hour the word was fulfilled concerning Nebuchadnezzar; he was driven from men and ate grass like oxen; his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws. 34 And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I BLESSED THE MOST HIGH AND PRAISED AND HONORED HIM WHO LIVES FOREVER: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand or say to Him, “What have You done?”36 At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and splendor returned to me. My counselors and nobles resorted to me, I was restored to my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, PRAISE AND EXTOL AND HONOR THE KING OF HEAVEN, all of whose WORKS ARE TRUTH, and HIS WAYS JUSTICE. And THOSE WHO WALK IN PRIDE He is able to put down.
- Special note: King Nebuchadnezzar gives a personal, first-hand testimony of what happened to him when he got PROUD. It was dreadful! He learned the hard way to exalt the Lord, and WALK HUMBLY before His majesty.
Daniel 5:18-20 – (Daniel’s account of that to Belshazzar, Nebuchadnezzar’s son) 18 O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom and majesty, glory and honor. But when HIS HEART WAS LIFTED UP, and HIS SPIRIT WAS HARDENED IN PRIDE, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him.

- Special note: When it refers to someone’s HEART BEING LIFTED up in Scripture, it is not in a good way. It refers to them getting PROUD, conceited, and head-strong.
ISRAEL HUMBLED, WARNED, AND PUNISHED
Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 11-14, 19 – And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, TO HUMBLE YOU and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3 So HE HUMBLED YOU, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord…11 “Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, 12 lest—when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are [f]multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; 14 when your HEART IS LIFTED UP, and you forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;… if you by any means forget the Lord your God, and follow other gods, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish…

THE PRIDE OF SODOM BROUGHT GOD’S JUDGMENT

2 Peter 2:6; Jude 1:7 – turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly… as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

I will take away from your midst those who rejoice in YOUR PRIDE, And you shall no longer be HAUGHTY In My holy mountain… I will cut off the PRIDE of the Philistines… the PRIDE of Assyria shall be brought down, And the scepter of Egypt shall depart… There is the sound of wailing shepherds!
